Measurement Principle

When an ultrasonic beam propagates in a liquid, the flow of the liquid will cause a slight change in the propagation time, and this change in propagation time is proportional to the flow rate of the liquid. At zero flow, the time required for the two sensors to emit and receive sound waves is exactly the same (the only technology that can actually measure zero flow), and when the liquid flows, the transmission time of the sound wave in the counter-flow direction is greater than that in the downstream direction.

This relationship complies with the following expression:

θ: the angle between the beam and the direction of liquid flow
M: the number of straight-line propagations of the sound beam in the liquid
D: the diameter of the pipe
Tup: propagation time of the sound beam in the positive direction
Tdown: propagation time of the sound beam in the counter direction
